Laurey's Professional Highlights
Creativity, clear communication and commitment have been at the heart of Laurey’s professional career. Graduating from Birmingham University with a BA Hons degree in English, Laurey embarked on a fast-tracked journalism course after a story she wrote during work experience hit worldwide headlines. She then spent nearly three years gathering stories for The Newark Advertiser, which found both regional and national audiences. Working to strict deadlines, Laurey loved the challenge of capturing real-life events, celebrations and dramas using the written word and built strong relationships with local businesses, schools, councillors, MPs and members of the public who trusted her to tell their stories.
These skills, along with her desire to drive change and make a difference, saw her venture into teaching; a challenge which was both rewarding and stressful in equal measure. Her role of a secondary English teacher demanded more than just explaining the finer nuances of Shakespeare, interpreting poetry, putting apostrophes in the right places, and explaining the differences between nouns and verbs; it drew on strong relationship building, gaining trust, creating calm and safe spaces and being able to critique problems and find solutions in tight time timeframes. Yet, as rewarding as the role was, Laurey learned her ambition and drive could not be quenched and quit the educational sphere after she was offered a prestigious client liaison position at a Wealth Management company based on the Welbeck Estate in Nottinghamshire.
This new challenge was unlike anything Laurey had undertaken due to the requirement to deal with accounts, taxes, pensions and investments for more than 300 clients. More than that, Laurey showed her versatility when the Practice Manager went on maternity leave and she stepped into her shoes to avoid the need to hire further cover from outside the company and essentially undertook two roles in one. This opportunity paid dividends in terms of further developing her skills in organisation, communication, copywriting, proofreading and social media management.
When Laurey happened upon The Passionate PA website and saw she could have her very own business doing the things she loves the most, she knew immediately it was the only logical next career step. It was an opportunity she grabbed with both hands and she has not looked back since.
Laurey is a creative thinker and true wordsmith, but words aren’t just a job to her. They really are a passion and after Laurey wrote and self-published her first novel in 2012, she was subsequently invited to contribute to an anthology of women’s fiction, organised by bestselling author Belinda Jones in 2013 and then again in 2014. In 2019 she entered and won a play writing competition which will eventually see her work staged by performance studies students at West Notts College in Mansfield. She also has several works for both women and young adults, that await her creative touch when she isn’t working on growing her own business and helping entrepreneurs grow theirs!
