Laurey is a wordsmith with a passion for efficiency and business growth. Here she shares a typical day in her world as The Passionate PA for Peterborough.
Laurey joined The Passionate PA in March 2019 after being made redundant and realising there was a different way to make a living! She chose to become a freelance PA in order to experience the variety and excitement of working with different businesses. Laurey joined us as the 7th Passionate PA (007 jokes always welcome!) and brings not just her skill set but her infectious positivity and sunny outlook to the team.
Getting to know Laurey
Alarm goes off at: 7am – I’m certainly an early bird and am both more productive and creative before lunch. It also is a huge mental boost to have ticked things off your ‘to-do’ list before 9am.
Start the day with: A coffee and writing down what I am going to achieve that day. Again, this aids my productivity and holds me accountable for what I need to achieve for both my business and my clients.
Where do you do most of your work? In the current climate, I do 90% of my work remotely. However I’m not usually a “virtual” freelancer as I love nothing more than being with my clients on a face-to-face basis. But, since the beginning of 2020, I have had to adjust my working practices along with the rest of the world. It’s been a challenge I have both embraced and loved in equal measure – but I so miss seeing my clients in person!
What sectors do your clients operate within: IT Management, Digital Marketing, Business Performance Management, LinkedIn Training, Financial Advice and Marketing… with plenty of smaller copywriting projects thrown in for good measure from contacts within my network.
Best part of your work: Exploring new and creative solutions that will enable my clients to succeed more quickly or efficiently. I love it when a client says ‘I never thought of that’ because it shows how taking the time to work on your business alongside a Passionate PA, rather than in it, can have a liberating effect!
Worst part of your work: Knowing when to close the laptop and take a break. I love the work I do and can sometimes be found working at ungodly hours or even at the weekend. My excuse is that when the creativity hits, you just have to ride the wave! Right?
Clients you add most value to: I do my best work with ambitious, growing businesses in any sector that are looking to streamline processes and improve their external communications. I can truly add value to businesses looking for a copywriter that will really get under their skin and portray their business to the outside world as if the MD had written the copy themselves.
After work you’ll be: Upcycling furniture or working on one of several half-finished books; creativity really is at core of my being and is what drives me. When I’ve finished being creative for a client, my natural response is ‘now what can I do?’ If I’m not being creative, then I will be found on a spin bike or hammering the pavement with my running shoes on… or lifting a well-earned glass of prosecco to my lips!
Why a franchise with The Passionate PA and not go it alone? Because life on your own is boring; having guidance from someone who has been there and done it makes you the best version of your professional self, much more quickly than if you go it alone. Plus, one coffee with Kate learning about the business and the question suddenly becomes ‘why not a franchise with The Passionate PA?’.
What did you do before: Oh, many things! I have been a journalist, a secondary English teacher and a Client Liaison and Office Manager for a wealth management company. Life is a rich tapestry and the same coloured thread would make it very plain! That’s why I love being a Passionate PA – the variety is great.
Favourite drink: This totally depends on the time of day…☺
Favourite location for a business meeting: Anywhere client feels most comfortable, as long as it’s warm.
What are you reading? Mythos by Stephen Fry. I absolutely adore mythology and how it informs so much of the literature written today, including mine!
Your guilty pleasure: Strictly Come Dancing and The Home Edit. I love sparkle, glitter and more importantly, dancing! I also love imagining how I could organise my whole life into a rainbow – if you don’t understand, get on Netflix and watch The Home Edit as soon as you can.
Favourite hobby/past time: Creative writing and a good spinning session!
Most inspirational/influential person in your career: I would say that I haven’t been influenced by any one person in particular, but I am forever inspired by those people who have chased a dream or fulfilled an ambition and who have lived their lives according to no-one’s limitations but their own.
Favourite animal and why: Cat. They’re my spirit animals.
Greatest contact/supplier that deserves a plug: The wonderful Jason Yearwood at Connect Business Peterborough. He made me so welcome when I moved my business to the area at the start of 2020 and has helped me gain a network of fantastic contacts. He is a huge ambassador of The Passionate PA and truly understands what I do, and how I can help businesses achieve the momentum and results they desire.
Your business plan (in one sentence!) for the coming year… To shape a rewarding business for myself, offering my varied skill set to ambitious business owners in and around Peterborough under the awesome Passionate PA brand (and enjoy every minute!).
